The Garden of Eden – Genesis 2 and 3

1 Garden of Eden

Last time we learned that God is the Creator of all things. When God created Adam and Eve, He made a gorgeous place for them to live. It was a beautiful garden which God Himself had planted. It was filled with delicious fruit of all kinds. A river of pure water flowed through the garden. It was called the Garden of Eden and Adam and Eve had everything they needed to make them happy.

The best thing of all was that God Himself came down each day to visit Adam and Eve. Every day God came to walk and to talk with them and they were very happy living there.

God told Adam and Eve that they could eat the fruit of every tree in the garden except one. God told them that “you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.” (Genesis 2:17).

Things went well for a time, but one day someone else came into their beautiful garden disguised as a snake. Guess who that was? It was Satan.

Who is Satan?

Satan is God’s great enemy. When God created him, he was a beautiful angel named Lucifer. Lucifer means “shining one.” He was the wisest and most beautiful angel that God ever created.

How did Lucifer become God’s enemy?

One day pride entered Lucifer’s heart. He thought about how wise he was and how beautiful he was, and he decided that he would take over God’s place, so he rebelled against God.

At that moment, Lucifer became God’s enemy, and God sent him out of Heaven. His name was changed to Satan, which means “enemy.” Satan is God’s enemy and he is our enemy too.

What happened in the garden?

Satan tricked Adam and Eve because he wanted them to disobey God. He wanted them to rebel against God as he had done. Satan came to Eve in the form of a serpent and He asked her if she and Adam could eat the fruit of all the trees in the garden.

Eve said that God had told them not to eat the fruit of “the tree of knowledge of good and evil,” and that, if they did, they would surely die.

Satan replied, “You will not certainly die,” for God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” (Genesis 3:4-5).

That was such a big lie and Jesus said that Satan is “a liar and the father of lies.” (John 8:44). Satan used a lie to trick Eve to disobey God.

Satan is very bad and he tries to trick us also. He may say to you, “Ah, you do not have to obey your parents and your teachers. Other kids disobey them and you can too.” And when you get in trouble, Satan says, “Just tell a lie they won’t know.”

Well, Eve was deceived by Satan. She should not have believed Satan’s lie but she did. She took the forbidden fruit and ate it. She gave the fruit to her husband and he ate it too. Adam should have told Eve – NO – since he was right there by her side, but he did not stop her.

Adam and Eve had disobeyed God, and by doing that, they had sinned.

All of a sudden they were afraid and they hid from God. Well we all know that we cannot hide from God since He knows everything and can see everything, but they did anyway.

God came to walk and talk with them as He always did and now He was calling for them. “Where are you?”

Well, God soon found them and they were afraid because they knew that they been disobedient. Then when God asked them some questions, Adam started blaming Eve for eating the fruit and giving it to him, and Eve started blaming the serpent for tempting her with the fruit. Have you ever blamed anyone else for something you have done?

Well, when we do not behave our mom and dad have to punish us, and God had to punish all three of them also.

To the serpent he said: You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life. (Genesis 3:14)

And because sin is a terrible thing and Adam and Eve had sinned, they could no longer live with God. So God sent them out of the beautiful garden which He had prepared for them. God placed Cherubims which are (powerful angels) with a shining sword which turned every way at the garden’s entrance to keep them out and they never were able to come back.

Instead of living in the beautiful garden and walking and talking with God, they now had to work very hard from morning till evening. Outside of the garden things changed and many thorns and thistles came up, which did not exist in the garden; that made it even harder to work the soil.

When God created the world, everything was beautiful and good, but now things are different, because sin changed God’s beautiful creation. But wait, if we trust, obey and believe in Jesus as our Savior one day we will live with Him again and everything is going to be just like it was in the Garden of Eden.

Goodbye, until next time; when we will learn about Adam and Eve’s first kids.

Until then, remember to say your prayers obey your mom and dad and do not forget to go to church and Sunday school next week.
