THE GREAT FLOOD – Genesis 7 – 9:17

1Noahs-Ark2

Last time we saw that Noah and his family were just finishing building the ark. Noah had great faith. He believed and trusted God even though they had never seen rain fall before.

The ark was finally ready for them to enter, the animals and all the supplies they needed were ready to be transported aboard the ark.

God must have gathered the animals himself because it says in the Bible that male and female, came to Noah and entered the ark (Genesis 7:9). God brought 7 pairs of some species and 2 pairs of others.

3The animals

So they all made their way to the ark, elephants, giraffes, bears, lions, at least 2 of each species. Can you imagine what the people must have thought of all this? Will all these animals find a place for them in the ark? God knew exactly what He was doing, and yes, everyone found their place in the ark.

God told Noah that 7 days from now I will send rain on the earth for 40 days and 40 nights and I will wipe from the face of the earth every living creature I have made. So Noah did all that the Lord told him to do.

4 Laughing at Noah

The sad part was the bad people saw all this and they did nothing about it. Perhaps some of them should have been asking what was happening and asking Noah if they could enter into the ark with him, but no one did. Apparently, they just laughed and mocked him, but Noah and his family continued doing what the Lord commanded and continued working.

5 Animals going in the Ark

Finally all the animals and the food were in the ark and God told Noah and his family to go into the ark also. Then after the 7 days God shut the door and the rain started to fall on the earth.

6shut the door

Noah was 600 years old when the rain started to fall on the earth. And Noah, his 3 sons, his wife and his 3 daughter-in-laws were safe in the ark and escaped the waters of the flood. Can you imagine out of all those people only 8 people got saved!

6a rain falling

Rain started to came down from heaven, which the people had never seen, and there were springs of water that released a lot of water from the earth. So the rivers got flooded and so did the lakes and there was more and more water everywhere.

7 people wanting to get in ws

When the bad people on the earth saw all this they must have thought, Noah was right, but it was too late, the door was closed and even if they wanted to get in, they could not. They probably tried to knock on the door to get into the ark, but it was too late.

The towns and villages were all covered and it continued raining. The people climbed the mountains and then grabbed anything that floated not to drown, but it did not work and they drowned.

8 drowned

Finally the water got so high that all was under water and everything that breathed died.

The Bible tells us that on the 17th day of the second month was the day when the rains started.

9 Ark started to float

As the waters rose, the ark started to float, it must have been a very interesting experience for Noah and his family and all those animals in there, but they trusted in the Lord and were not afraid.

 10 feeding the animals

They must have been very busy taking care of animals and feeding them.

11 150 days

The Bible tells us that it rained for 40 days and 40 nights. And the waters flooded the earth for 150 days.

 12 landing on mount Ararat

Then God sent a wind over the earth, and slowly the water started going down and finally the ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat.

But there was still a lot of water since the ark rested on Mount Ararat, which was a very high mountain and they had to wait for the water to continue to go down.

Did you know that there still is a mountain with the name of Ararat today and that it is located in the country of Turkey? Take a look at the map below.

Finally Noah could see the tops of the mountains from the window and sent out a raven, and it kept flying back and forth.

Then he sent out a dove to see if the water had gone down some more but since the dove did not find a place to rest it returned back to the ark.

Noah reached out his hand and took the dove and brought it back into the ark.

A week later he sent the dove back out again

and it returned with freshly plucked olive leaf in its beak.

And Noah waited another week and sent the dove out again but this time it did not return to him and Noah knew that the earth was dry now.

17 dove 2nd time

By the 27th day of the second month the earth was completely dry and God told Noah that it was time to leave the ark, so Noah and his family let the animals out. They must have been very happy since they had been in the ark for a very long time.

Do you know how long Noah and everyone was in the ark? If we look in the Bible it will give us the answer. Noah was in the ark for a total of 370 days that is over a year. They were in there from the 17th day of the second month (Genesis 7:11) to the 27th day of the second month the following year (Genesis 8:14).

20 animals out of the ark

Then once all the animals were out, Noah and his family built an altar and worshiped God and thank Him again for saving them from that awful flood that had killed everyone in the whole world.

So God was pleased and He blessed Noah and his family. He told them to have many children and fill the earth with people again.

22 fruits vegetables and meat

He told them that they could eat vegetables, fruit and now meat also. If you remember before everyone just ate fruits and vegetables.

23 rainbow

And then God said to Noah, “Look up in the sky.” So Noah looked up and the storm clouds were drifting away; the bright sun was shining against Noah’s back. And against the dark grey sky, God made a brilliant rainbow appear. God said to Noah, “I have set my rainbow in the sky. This will be the sign of the covenant I have made with you and all creatures, never again to destroy the earth by a flood. The rainbow will always remind us of the promise between you and me.”

25 Gods Promises (2)

So, the next time you see a rainbow, think of Noah and the flood. Remember that God loves you. That is God’s promise, and God always keeps His promises.

Goodbye, until next time; when we will learn what happened a long time after God rescued Noah and his family from the flood. People already had something new in mind. . .

 24THINKING

Until then, remember to say your prayers obey your mom and dad and do not forget to go to church and Sunday school next week.
