WISE MEN – STILL SEEK HIM – Matthew 2

 1Wisemen close to Bethlehem

After Jesus was born, Joseph and Mary decided to stay in Bethlehem, because Jesus was too little to go on the long journey back to Nazareth. So Joseph found a house for them to live in Bethlehem and there is where Mary and the baby Jesus lived for a while.

 1 Bethlehem

Now far, far away when Jesus was born, there were some very wise men that lived in the East and they were always studying the sky.

 2 wiseman reading

On the day that Jesus was born, they saw a very special star that appeared and was shining very brightly in the sky. They looked at their scrolls, which were like books today and they knew that many prophets had predicted the coming of Messiah, which is the Savior Jesus.

So they made preparations to follow the star. They had to get their horses and camels ready because it was a very long journey that would take them many months to get there.

This special star led them to Bethlehem to the place where Jesus had been born.

Jerusalem

After travelling a very long time, they arrived in Jerusalem, and they ask the people there, where they could find the King of the Jews because they had come to worship Him.

When Herod the king heard this, he was worried and so were the people in Jerusalem.

He asked all the chief priests and all the teachers where Jesus Christ was supposed to be born. They responded and said in Bethlehem of Judea, because the prophets had written about Him in the Bible in the Old Testament.

 5 prophecies OT

People have been writing for thousands of years about the coming of Jesus? Yes that is right, the Bible told them for a long time that Jesus was coming and He had finally arrived.

 6 wisemen before Herod 2 (2)

So once the king found out that the Christ was to be born in Bethlehem, he called the magi secretly and asked them when they first saw the star appear, and then he told them to go to Bethlehem and once they found Jesus to come back and tell Herod all about Him. But King Herod was jealous and had something else in mind, he wanted to kill baby Jesus.

 7 Star Over-Bethlehem

So the wise man left again at night riding their horses and camels and they followed that big shining star in the heaven that was leading them where to go.

8 bethlehem star over the house

When they got close to Bethlehem, they saw that the star was standing still over a certain house, it was Jesus’ house, and they knew that was the place they must go.

Hurry, let us go and see Him they said.

 9 gifts for Jesus

They came to bring Jesus gifts, very expensive gifts they were gold, frankincense and myrrh.

 Jesus

So the wise men came in the house and Jesus was there with Mary sitting on her lap.  Joseph was a poor man and these gifts were God’s provision for the care of Mary and her little Son.

I love giving gifts do you? Have you ever given Jesus a present? This is my present for Him.

11 My heart

After the wise men saw Jesus, God warned them in a dream that Herod was an evil king and to go back home another way, and that is what they did.

Joseph also had a dream and God told him that the wicked king Herod would try to kill the baby, and that he must take Mary and baby Jesus to Egypt where they would be safe, and that is what they did.

12-Angel in dream

So they left right away and travelled by night and got there some days later early in the morning.

 13-going to Egypt

As they were getting closer they could see the big pyramids that had already been standing there for over a 1000 years. They sure are big!

14 pyramids

The Bible does not tell us how long they were in Egypt; it may have been for a few months or more. When the wicked king died, an angel came to Joseph again and told him that it was safe to go back to Israel.

15 Returning from Egypt

So the little family took the long trip back to their country through the desert and went back to the town of Nazareth where they had lived before Jesus was born. That is were Jesus grew up and He helped Joseph in his shop.

16 coming home to Nazareth

Joseph was a carpenter and he taught Jesus all about working with wood.
