JESUS’ BAPTISM – Matthew 3 & Luke 3

John lived in the desert for many years. He wore clothes made of camel’s hair, and he ate honey and locusts. People came from the cities to hear him teach. He was known as John the Baptist.

Matthew 3:1–5

John the Baptist taught the people about Jesus Christ. He told them to repent of their sins and be baptized.

Matthew 3:2-3

And when the people repented of their sins, John baptized them in the river Jordan.

Matthew 5–6

One day, when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he was baptizing, he said to them: “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? Before being baptized, prove that you have turned from sin by doing worthy deeds. Don’t be thinking that you are safe because you are descendants of Abraham. That proves nothing!”

Matthew 3:7-9

The people that came to the river Jordan also asked John how to live better lives. He told them to share with the poor, tell the truth, and be fair to others. He said that Jesus Christ would soon come. Jesus would give them the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Luke 3:10–13

Then some soldiers asked him, “And what should we do?”

He replied, “Don’t extort money and don’t accuse people falsely—be content with your pay.”

Luke 3:14

Then, one day when John the Baptist was baptizing people in the Jordan River, Jesus Christ came to him. He asked John to baptize Him. John knew that Jesus had always obeyed God’s commandments and did not need to repent. John thought that Jesus should be baptizing him.

Matthew 3:13–14

But Jesus said, “Please do it, because I must do all that is right.”So John baptized him, and Jesus set an example by obeying and being baptized.

Matthew 3:15

After his baptism, as soon as Jesus came up out of the water, the heavens were opened and he saw the Spirit of God coming down in the form of a dove.  And a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, and I am wonderfully pleased with him.”

Matthew 3:16–17; John 1:33–36

After Jesus was baptized, He left and went to the wilderness.

Matthew 4:1
