LOVE ONE ANOTHER, AS JESUS LOVES US – John 13:34

John 13 vs 14

Jesus was always sharing the love of God with everyone. One day He was talking to His disciples, because He knew that the day was coming when he would return to heaven. Jesus was trying to prepare His disciples for the day when He would no longer be with them. He wanted to leave them with something that would help them to live in such a way that other people would see them and know that they were His disciples.

Do you know what a disciple is? Well it is someone that follows a teacher, like a student, and Jesus was their teacher. And do you know? He is also our teacher through reading the Bible.

He told his disciples: “I will be with you only a little while longer, then you will look for Me, but you won’t find Me because you cannot go where I am going. I give you a new commandment. You must love each other just as I have loved you. If you love each other, everyone will know that you are My disciples.” (John 13:33-35)

Jesus wanted people to love one another just like the story He told of a man who was very kind and gentle. He lived in the same country as the Israelites, but he was a Samaritan.

The Samaritans and Israelites didn’t like each other much, even though they lived right next to each other.

One day an Israelite was traveling on a road and some robbers attacked him and hurt him and took his clothes. They left him lying by the side of the road and he was hurt so bad that he could not move.

Soon after that happened a Jewish priest came by and saw the man. The priest walked by on the other side of the road and did not help the man.

Another Jewish man who worked in the temple came by. He also saw the injured man. But he did not help the man either and walked by on the other side of the road. These two men sure did not have the love of Jesus in their heart did they?

Then a Samaritan man came along. Remember, the Jews and the Samaritans did not get along. But when the Samaritan saw the man that was hurt lying on the road, he felt sorry for him. He took care of the man’s wounds and put clothes on him.

Then the Samaritan put him on his own donkey and took the man to an inn and cared for him until the next day. When the Samaritan had to leave, he gave money to the innkeeper and told him to take care of the man. He even told him that when he returned if he owed him anything else for the care of the man that he would pay him.

The Samaritan had God’s love in his heart and was not like the other two who just walked by because they did not care about the injured man.

Did you know that this is what we are supposed to do also; we are supposed to love one another and help each other when we have needs.

Love forgives

Sometimes it is hard to love someone because some people are mean to us, or call us names. Sometimes they make fun of us or hurt us. But God wants us to love everyone, even if we don’t like what they do to us.

Remember, we love one another because God loves us! And maybe we can have an opportunity to teach someone else the love of Jesus, just by the way we behave.

If you want to read the story in the Bible which is called “The Parable of the Good Samaritan” you will find it in the book of Luke, chapter 10 verses 30 – 35.
