Joseph was thirty years old when he began to serve Pharaoh.

In the years when the crops were good, Joseph built large silos and saved all the food he could.

God blessed him and there was so much food saved, it couldn’t be counted.

During those good years, Joseph who was married to Asenath had two sons, the first one he named Manasseh and the second one Ephraim.

Then the good years in Egypt ended, and the seven years with no food began, just as Joseph had predicted. There was hunger in all the lands, but in all of Egypt there was food. When all of Egypt started running out of food and got very hungry, they went to Pharaoh for food. He said, “Go to Joseph and do what he says.”

Joseph opened all the storehouses and sold food to the Egyptians. In fact, the whole world came to Joseph for food.

In Canaan, Jacob, Joseph’s father heard that there was food in Egypt. He told his sons, “Go down and buy food for us, then we won’t starve. So Joseph’s ten older brothers went down to Egypt to buy grain; but Jacob did not let their younger brother Benjamin go with them.

Joseph sold food to everyone who came to Egypt to buy, so Jacob’s sons went to see Joseph like everyone else. They came into the place where he was and bowed down before him. When he saw them, Joseph knew they were his brothers. Twenty-three years before they had sold him into slavery, but the brothers did not know who Joseph was.

Do you remember the dreams that Joseph had when he was young? Now, as in Joseph’s dreams, his brothers bowed before him.

“Who are you?” Joseph asked. “Where do you come from?”

“We come from Canaan to buy food,” they answered.

“No, you did not,” Joseph said. “You are spies. You want to see how weak Egypt has become.”

“No, sir, we are twelve brothers.” They said. We are sons of a man that lives in the land of Canaan. Our  youngest brother stayed at home with our father, and one of our brother is no longer with us.”

“You must prove you aren’t spies,” Joseph answered. “Someone must go back and bring your youngest brother here.” Then he locked them up in jail for three days.

Three day later, Joseph spoke: “if you are honest men, one of you must remain here in prison while the others may leave with food for your family. But bring your youngest brother back to me, then I’ll know you are not spies.” The youngest brother Benjamin was Rachel’s son, just like Joseph.

Joseph chose Simeon to stay in Egypt. Reuben told the others, “This has happened because of what you did to Joseph.” They did not know Joseph understood them, because he talked to them through and interpreter.

Then Joseph left them and wept. He knew his brothers were sorry for what they had done.
