THE PARABLE OF THE RICH FOOL – Luke 12:13-21

1E Rich fool

Once more we find Jesus teaching the crowds when all of a sudden someone said to Him. “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.”

 2 Rich fool

In Jesus’ day, usually when there was a dispute, they went to a rabbi (a teacher) to resolve the disagreement. So this man thought that Jesus could resolve the issue.

He was very rude though, since he interrupted Jesus and His teaching. He was greedy and he was not paying attention to the important things Jesus was teaching, he just wanted his problem to be resolved.

Do you know what greed means? It is someone who just thinks about money, and he wants more and more and nothing makes him happy.

Jesus was not there to settle this man’s problems, he was there to teach.

 4 rich fool

So He told the man “Friend, who made me a judge over you to decide such things as that?”

Then Jesus warned everyone because they all needed to hear how bad greed is.

5 rich fool

“Watch out! Be careful about wanting to have more and more things, because life is not made up of how much a person has.”

Then Jesus told them a story. He said, “A certain rich man’s had a farm that produced a very large crop.

6 rich fool

So the rich man thought to himself, ‘What should I do? I don’t have any place left to store my crops.’

7 rich fool

“Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my old barns and build bigger ones.

8 rich fool

Once I have done that, I will store my extra grain in them.

And he kept thinking and he said to himself, “Now you have plenty of grain stored away for many years and you can take life easy. Then I can eat, drink and have a good time.”

9 rich fool

Unfortunatelly, this man was only thinking about himself, he did not think about God who had created everything and it was God that produced the good crop for this man.

He was also not thinking about other people, like feeding the poor and helping those that had very little.

10 rich fool

So God said to him, ‘You fool! You will die this very night. Then who will get everything you worked for?’ The Bible does not tell us who came and got all his possessions but we are sure someone did.

So we need to be very careful how we think and act with all the good things God gives us, because the same thing might happen to us if we keep everything for ourselves and don’t share it with those in need.

Yes, people are fools when they store up earthly wealth and forget to have a rich relationship with God.

In these next verses we read once more where Jesus taught about possessions and calls them treasures, when He said:

T in heaven (E)

Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal.  Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.
