WHAT IS PRAYER?

7 Kids praying in faith

Can you tell me what prayer is?

Yes, prayer is talking to God. Did you know that Jesus talked to His Father a lot through prayer?

16 Jesus Praying

If Jesus prayed, we should follow His example and pray also. Do you know why Jesus prayed? Because He loved His Father and wanted to stay close to Him.

So the first and most important reason we should pray is because we love God and want to stay in fellowship with Him.

We pray to God to thank Him for everything that He does for us. We pray for our family, our home, our food, our friends and many other things.

We should pray and ask God to give us guidance, protection, strength and wisdom because we all need these things to walk according to God’s Holy Word.

We can pray when we are scared or when we feel that we are in trouble.

We should pray for others. Like when they are sick, or sad, or if something is troubling them.

We can talk to God anytime we want to.

And do you know what? God loves us and He loves to answer our prayers, He loves when we fellowship with Him. It is kind of like speaking to your very best friend anywhere you are, because God is always there for us.

Did you know that we can talk to God anytime we want to? We can talk to Him while kneeling, or while walking. We can pray quietly or we can sing to God. We can pray while lying down in bed or while standing up.

Praying before meals and bedtime is good, but God wants to hear from us more often than that. He wants to be involved in our lives, to comfort us when we are sad, strengthen us when we are scared and laugh with us when we are happy. God will give true meaning and direction to our lives. We need to make Him part of our lives throughout the day by reading of His Word, the Bible and seeking Him through prayer.

How can we pray to God, our heavenly Father, if we can not see Him? Praying to God is a lot like talking to your best friend on the phone; even you don’t see your friend who may be several miles away, you know that your friend is talking to you because you recognize his voice.

When we come to God we need to be completely open and honest with Him, because if we are not He will not hear our prayers. Even thought He is ready to forgive us of our sins He wants us to come to Him with a repenting heart.

Here are 5 points on how to pray:

5 finger prayer

  1. Praise – Thank God for Who He is, and especially thank Him for sending Jesus to save us from our sins.

  1. Thanksgiving – Thank God for something that He has done for you today because He is always doing something good for us. “Always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (Ephesians 5:20)

  1. Ask Something for Someone Else – You can pray for someone to get well, or for your friend to have a safe trip. You might ask for someone that has lost his or her job to find a better one. Paul told Timothy “prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings are to be made for all people” (1 Timothy 2:1)

2 Praying

  1. Confession – We should ask God to forgive us when we have not been so nice or have been selfish. “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9)

  1. Ask for Something for Yourself – In fact God is willing to give us many good things as long as we ask for them in accordance to His will and not for selfish motives. “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” (Matthew 7:7)

We have to remember that God know everything about us and that we cannot hide anything from Him.

The Bible tells us: “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” (Jeremiah 29:13)

So let’s keep talking to the Lord because if we draw near to Him, He will draw near to us.
