The Bible tells us that we are supposed to honor God by giving Him 10% of what we have. We should keep God always first in our mind when we receive something. (Proverbs 3:9)

So, tithing is about giving the first of everything to God.

It is an act of worship just like praying, singing songs to God and reading the Bible.

In the Bible people that loved God gave Him their first 10% of everything.

In Genesis 14 Abraham gave a tenth of everything he had to a priest of God; like we should give to the church.

Since everything we have comes in one way or another from our Heavenly Father. To tithe is just returning what was already His.

God only asks us to give back a little bit, which is 10% of what we earn like from our allowance, from chores that we perform around the house or money that we get as a present. God owns everything. We just give back because we love Him and want to honor Him with our faithfulness.

You may ask: “Why does God need money if He has everything?”

Well the reason is: The church is God’s house and the money we give to the church helps to pay for the building, the electricity and the water bill.

It pays the pastor who is dedicated to the work of God.

It also pays for supplies, ministry, missions and feeding the poor.

So why do we need to pay the pastor? Because the pastor’s job is to lead and teach the people in the church and be there to help them when they call him, because they have a need. Since the pastor works to help others, we need to help him so he can take care of his family, too.

So what is 10%?

If you earn an allowance by doing chores around the house, then you should give part of it to the church.

Let’s say you earn 10 pennies each week, then one penny is your tithing that should go back to God.

If you get $10.00 for your birthday, then you should give $1.00 which is 10% back to God.

The Bible tells us that if we do not give back to God, that we are actually stealing from Him.

That sounds pretty bad . . . don’t you think? (Malachi 3:8)

But the Bible also tells us that God loves a cheerful giver. (2 Corinthians 9:7)

So how about if you start learning how to “Save” to be able to “Tithe”, and have the rest of your money to “Spend” on what you would like.

Now that you know about tithing, next time during the worship service, when the offering is being collected, you can give back to God your tithing and thank Him for everything He does for you.

Remember tithing is a sign that we love God and that we love to help others that are in need.
