ON THE ROAD TO EMMAUS – Luke 24:13-49

On the third day after Jesus was crucified and put in the tomb, two of His disciples were walking along a road out of Jerusalem. One of them was Cleopas.

They were on their way to a village called Emmaus 7 miles (11 kilometers) from Jerusalem.

They were talking about the sad events that led Jesus to be crucified on a cross and die. As they talked, a man came up and walked alongside them. It was Jesus but they did not recognize Him.

The stranger asked, ‘What are you talking about?’ They stopped and stood still, looking sad. Cleopas asked, ‘Are you the only person in Jerusalem who does not know what has happened?’

 ‘What things?’ asked the stranger?

‘Jesus of Nazareth was handed over by the Chief Priests to be sentenced to death and they crucified Him,’ the disciples explained. ‘We hoped He would save us and free us from the Jews.’

‘But then, this morning when some of our women went to the tomb, it was empty. His body was missing! They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels. The angels said that Jesus was alive! Some of our friends went to the tomb to see what had happened and it was definitely empty, but they did not see Jesus.’

‘How foolish you are not to believe what the prophets said would happen many years ago. They told us the Savior (Messiah) would have to suffer before rising to glory.’

Then Jesus explained how first Moses then other prophets had written down that the Savoir of the world would die and rise from the dead.

As they approached Emmaus Jesus, who was still a stranger to them, acted as if He did not plan to stop there. But they begged Him, ‘Stay with us. It is late; and it will be getting dark pretty soon.’ So He accepted and went in to stay with them.

When they sat down to eat, Jesus took some bread, gave thanks, broke it and gave it to them. Immediately God allowed the two disciples to see who the stranger was. Jesus!

At that moment Jesus disappeared from their sight. Then they said to each other ‘Weren’t our hearts warmed as Jesus spoke to us and explained what is written about the Savior?’ It was so exciting when He explained the true meaning of the Scriptures.

So the two disciples got up immediately and rushed back to Jerusalem as fast as they could.

When they got there, they found the 11 apostles and other disciples together. They were saying, “It’s true! The Lord has risen! He has appeared to Simon!” Then the two of them told what had happened to them on the way. They told how they had recognized Jesus when he broke the bread. Now the room where they were meeting was locked.

All of a sudden Jesus appeared and stood among them and said: ‘Peace be with you.’ Everyone was frightened, thinking they were seeing a ghost. Can you imagine Jesus walked right through a closed door! I would have been frightened also, wouldn’t you?

But Jesus asked them ‘Why are you afraid and in doubt? Look at my hands. Look at my feet. You can see that it’s really me. Touch me and make sure that I am not a ghost, because ghosts don’t have bodies, as you see that I do.’

The disciples were full of joy and amazement but could still not believe Jesus was really alive. ‘Do you have something I can eat?’ Jesus asked. So they gave Him some broiled fish and Jesus ate it as they watched.

Then he helped them understand the Scriptures. He told them: The Scriptures say that the Messiah must suffer, and then three days later He will rise from death. They also say that all people of every nation must be told in My name to turn to God, in order to be forgiven. So beginning in Jerusalem, you must tell everything that has happened.

But before leaving He told them listen! My Father has promised you something; I will send Him to you. But you must stay in Jerusalem until you have received that power from heaven. Then Jesus once more disappeared from their sight.
